First, identify what is changing. Moving to a different campus of the same DLI, changing programs at the same school, and transferring to a new DLI can have different consequences. Check the school’s DLI number and the conditions on your permit rather than relying on a college adviser’s general description.
If you are moving to another post-secondary DLI, follow IRCC’s current process for a new study permit or extension. Gather a valid letter of acceptance from the receiving institution and determine whether a PAL/TAL is required for your application category. IRCC describes limited situations in which an eligible student may begin at the new school while an extension is being processed. Do not assume this applies to every transfer: confirm the facts and conditions listed on the official page.
Before withdrawing, ask both schools for written dates: when your current enrollment ends, when the new program begins, and whether the receiving school can issue the required documents. Save transcripts, tuition records, correspondence, and proof of any application submission. Maintain your current status and comply with the existing permit conditions while the change is underway.
A transfer can affect more than attendance. It may influence future PGWP eligibility, the program length used for a work-permit assessment, or your ability to work while studying. Confirm the receiving program’s DLI and PGWP status independently with IRCC; marketing statements are not a guarantee.
If the new school start date is close, ask IRCC’s official support channel or an authorized representative to assess whether you can begin classes before a decision. Avoid making an irreversible withdrawal based only on an assumption.
