Create one folder before your school confirms completion. Save your final transcript, completion letter, program name and length, DLI information, study-permit history, language-test result if required, and any documents explaining a change in full-time status. The application deadline is tied to written confirmation that you completed the program, so record the date on the letter or transcript and do not wait until your permit is close to expiring.
Next, check the rules that apply to your specific program. The field-of-study requirement affects some non-degree programs and is tied to the program’s six-digit Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code and relevant study-permit application date. If the field requirement applies, compare the code exactly against IRCC’s eligible list. A program title that sounds similar is not proof of a matching code. IRCC has said it will not add or remove fields from the list during 2026, but that does not make every program eligible.
Also confirm the language requirement and the required level for your type of credential. Review whether your study history meets the full-time study requirements and whether any permitted exception applies. If you completed more than one program, do not assume that all program lengths or eligibility periods can be combined; read the rules for that combination.
If you are unsure, request written confirmation from the DLI of the program’s official name, credential, dates, and CIP code, then compare it with IRCC’s page. A PGWP is generally a one-time opportunity. Get the facts right before submitting, and keep a complete copy of the application.
